The former home of the late cabinet minister and writer Conor Cruise O’Brien has been destroyed by fire.

Three tenders from Dublin Fire Brigade were on Monday night bringing the blaze in Howth in north Co Dublin under control.

However, the flames had taken hold by the time the alarm was raised and the fire crews arrived and the property at the summit of Howth Head was gutted.
