A man charged with raping two young girls in Athlone has been further remanded in custody after a court appearance yesterday.

The 30-year-old from the midlands, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Harristown District Court in Co Roscommon.

He is charged with the double rape of each of the girls, aged 6 and 9, at an address in Athlone on Saturday, September 28th.

He appeared before Harristown District Court where Judge Geoffrey Browne remanded him in continued custody at Castlerea Prison.

Dressed in a white T-shirt and dark trousers, the man remained silent during his brief appearance in court.

Insp Padraic Jones applied to have him further remanded in custody to Harristown District Court on Friday, November 8th.

There was no application made on behalf of the accused man, and his solicitor, Lisa Barrett, consented to his further remand.

After his brief appearance the man was walked back by prison officers to Castlerea Prison, which adjoins Harristown District Court.
