Insanity to be an issue in O’Gorman case, judge hears

Saverio Bellante (35) accused of killing journalist in Dublin last year

Lawyers for the man charged with murdering journalist Tom O’Gorman have said insanity will be an issue in the case, which will be short as a result.

Saverio Bellante (35) is accused of murdering Mr O'Gorman on January 11th or 12th last year at the house they shared at Beech Park Avenue, Castleknock in Dublin.

The accused was Mr O’Gorman’s tenant.

The Italian man's barrister, Seán Guerin SC, told the Central Criminal Court on Monday morning that it was a case where insanity would be an issue and that it would take up a short period of time.

He told Mr Justice Paul Carney that a trial date had been set for December 14th next but asked for liberty to apply for an earlier date. The judge granted the request.

Mr Guerin was also granted a request to transfer his client’s legal aid from one firm of solicitors to another.
