Bail granted to Dublin man charged with IRA membership

A Dublin man charged with IRA membership has been granted bail by the Special Criminal Court.

Ryan Glennon (24), of Macken Villas, Macken Street, Dublin 2 was charged at a late night sitting of the Special Criminal Court last week with membership of an unlawful organisation, namely Óglaigh na hÉireann, otherwise the Irish Republican Army, otherwise the IRA within the State on May 13, 2015.

He had been arrested by members of the Special Detective Unit as part of an ongoing operation into the activities of dissident republicans in the Dublin area.

The three-judge non-jury court admitted Mr Glennon to bail on consent and on a number of conditions.

An indenpendent surety of €12,000 was present in court. State Solicitor Michael O’Donovan said a freezing order had been placed on the bank account and that the gardaí were satisfied of the “provenance” of the account details provided.

Mr Glennon was required to enter into his own bond of €100 to keep the peace and be of good behaviour, surrender his passport and travel documents, sign on daily at a local garda station, observe a daily curfew, reside at a given address and provide the sole mobile phone number to be used by him while on bail to gardaí and to keep that phone switched on at all times.

He was also required to undertake not to leave the jurisdiction, not to go to county Wexford, not to contact any prosecution witnesses, not to associate with any co-accused save for in the presence of his legal team and not to associate with any persons charged or convicted of a scheduled offence.

Judge Martin Nolan, presiding alongside Judge Hamill and Judge Ryan, remanded Mr Glennon in custody with consent to bail to October 27th next.

Detective Sergeant Padraig Boyce had told the court that he formally arrested the accused at Londonbridge Road, Dublin 4 at approximately 5pm on Wednesday July 29th last.

The court heard that Mr Glennon made no reply to his arrest or caution by Detective Sergeant Boyce and he did not stand up when the court registrar read over the charge to him.
