Bail for Co Antrim man who allegedly attacked his family

A Co Antrim man allegedly wielded a knife and hammer in attacks on relatives and their homes, a Belfast court has heard.

Gary Hartley (47) faces a total of 10 charges connected to a series of incidents in Greenisland on May 18th.

The alleged offences include aggravated burglary with intent to commit grievous bodily harm and four assaults.

Hartley, of Knockleigh Drive in Carrickfergus, is also accused of criminal damage to two houses, a Renault Scenic car, attempting to enter another dwelling with intent, and possession of offensive weapons, namely a knife and hammer.

Police opposed Hartley’s bail application at Belfast Magistrates’ Court, claiming he may try to target relatives again.

“This was a sustained attack involving a number of incidents,” a detective said. “There was damage to a car, two houses and two members of the family in a number of sequential attacks involving knives and a hammer.”

It was alleged that at one stage Hartley entered his nephew’s home armed with a blade. “He offered no account for his behaviour and police believe he will attempt further attacks on his family,” the detective added.

A defence lawyer said Hartley would be going to live with his daughter almost 10km away from the area. He told the court his client has anxiety issues for which he is seeking treatment.

Hartley was granted bail but banned from entering parts of Greenisland or contacting any alleged victims.

District Judge Ken Nixon also imposed an alcohol ban and ordered him to report to police three times a week.

He is due back in court on June 1st.
