Appeal over murder of dissident republican

PSNI seeks assistance over 2010 killing of Kieran Doherty in Derry

Detectives investigating the murder of a dissident republican who was killed by paramilitary associates have made a fresh appeal for help in catching the killers.

Kieran Doherty, who was 31, was shot dead and left on the outskirts of Derry near the Border four years ago today. The Real IRA claimed responsibility.

Doherty, a former paramilitary prisoner, was found dead on the Braehead Road. He had been stripped and shot in the head.

No one has ever been charged with the murder, despite three arrests.

Detectives said they still needed assistance and information from the community to make progress in the investigation.

A spokesman for the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch, said: “This investigation remains open four years after this horrific murder. The investigation would make more progress if those individuals who know what happened to Kieran, and who killed him, would talk to us.”

The victim had been in his family home at Coshowen in Derry until about 8pm on the evening of February 24th, 2010, when he went out. The next sighting of him was when a passer-by found his body on the Braehead Road around 10.40pm.

The PSNI spokesman added: “We want to speak to anyone who was on that road any time from 8pm that evening and saw anything suspicious or who knows of Kieran’s movements after he left his home.

“There has been speculation about Kieran’s death but police need evidence to bring charges and get justice for Kieran and his family. Information from the community, not speculation, will help police to build an evidential case.”

Police said anyone with information on what happened is asked to contact detectives at Maydown on 0845 600 8000.

Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
