Pricewatch product reviews: Chocolate chip cookies

CADBURY CHOC CHIP COOKIES

€1.49 for 144g, €10.35 per kg

We reckon when it comes to chocolate-related purchases, you are rarely going to go a million miles wrong when you buy a Cadbury product. It might not be the best chocolate in the world, but it has consistency on its side. We like these cookies (or, as we like to call them, biscuits) a lot – too much, if truth be told – and nine biscuits disappear worryingly quickly. There are great big chunks of chocolate chips and an oddly salty flavour that we find quite pleasant. The biscuits are crunchy and not excessively crumbly, so are good for dunking.

Verdict: Hard not to eat the lot.

CHIPS AHOY!

€1.49 for 168g, €8.87per kg

Pricewatch is a sucker for the word "new", so when we see it slapped on this packet we just can't resist buying them, even if the "crispy choco caramel" description is a little off-putting. This company is massively popular in the United States but its product leaves Pricewatch cold. The biscuits are far too sweet and we can almost taste the crunch of pure sugar disguised as "crispy bits", whatever they are supposed to be. The chocolate flirts dangerously with tastelessness and the "caramel" is neither smooth nor creamy but clumpy and gooey and it sticks to our teeth like an excessively sweet limpet.

Verdict: Chips avoid!

MARKS & SPENCER

€3 for five cookies

Okay, so we know these are at the expensive end of the scale, but we can’t resist them. They are excellent. The biscuits are large, the dough is that perfect mix of crunchy and spongy and the chocolate chips are ample and gorgeous. They are baked in-store, so if you get them when they are fresh and warm they are just delicious. In fact, their general brilliance is one of the only problems we can find with them: if we were to eat as many of them as we would like, we would be as big as a house by the weekend. The price is also an issue, and they don’t stay fresh for long.

Verdict: Gorgeous.

FOX'S CHUNKY COOKIES

€2.45 for 180g, €13.60 per kg

There are eight big, thick biscuits in the packet, and we like them a lot. The biscuits are crumbly and oaty, and the chocolate bits are enormous and evenly distributed. They lose a star because they are a bit too sweet for our tastes. But what do you expect from a chocolate chip biscuit? We are a little concerned about the price, too.

Verdict: Lovely but . . .
