Travel Gear: Stan Smith goes waterproof, secure rucksacks and phone power

Stan Smith Gore-Tex

In the pantheon of classic runners, the Adidas Stan Smith from 1971 is right up there. Named after the then world number one tennis player, it was a high performance sports shoe. Street fashion cred came later. Now it’s got a Gore-Tex lining making it waterproof yet breathable. It still has the leather upper, familiar three stripes icon, of course, and a rubber cupsole. It’s not clear exactly why it’s getting this entirely practical makeover, but who cares as long as they’re looking pristine white and box-fresh. €140 from adidas.ie

RiutBag Secure Rucksack

There’s no doubt that when travelling with a rucksack one can feel exposed in packed train stations and crowded street markets. It’s only a couple of years since Sarah Giblin had a brainwave to make them more secure: put the zip against her back, well away from the prying fingers of pickpockets. Crowd-funded originally, there are a couple versions, including for laptops. Each features wide mouth, zippered openings which face into your back, yet is easily accessible once it’s off. Lots of internal compartments for organisational peace of mind too if that’s your thing. From £29 (€34), see riut.co.uk

bKey Emergency Smartphone Battery

Just the size of a house key, bKey is stopgap solution to running out of phone charge on the go. It only puts out 350mAh, with about 45 minutes of usage, but that should usually be enough to get you back on-grid again. It comes in a selection of colours, with a Lighting connector for Apple or micro USB for brands such as Samsung and HTC. Caps protect the connectors at both ends, with recharging by way of a regular USB, where a light indicates when it’s ready to go. $34.98, see shopbkey.com
