Travel Gear: Multi-pocket weekender

Caterpillar’s tough smartphone and sixteen lens camera.

1 Lost Explorer Traveler Bag Corkshell is a patented fabric made with the granulated by-product of wine corks and it gives this weekend bag from Lost Explorer its water resistant quality. I do like a pocket or two and this has them in trumps. There's a also a hanging suit compartment, a removable shoe bag and a laptop slot. Lost Explorer tells us it's got a military spec finish so it must be tough. The pricing is certainly Pentagon-robust. $695 from lostexplorer.com

2 Caterpillar S60 Smartphone And speaking of robust, this is Caterpillar's latest addition to its toughie smartphone range. Designed for the outdoors user, the die cast frame of the Cat S60 can take 1.8 m drops, is waterproof to 5m, and has a Gorilla Glass touchscreen with wet finger support. It also has the world's first integrated thermal-imaging camera from FLIR Systems. Running Android, it's got all the usual phone functions. $600, see catphones.com

3 Light L16 Camera In some ways Light's new L16 is coming from the same place as the Lytro camera, using computation power to offer extraordinary post-shooting editing capabilities. Light's innovation is evident from the front in that it uses combinations of 16 lenses to compile the shot. There are 35mm, 70mm 150mm modules which the software optimises for your image. $1,699 from light.com
