Travel Gear: Glow in the dark star map

And a packable waterproof day pack and the phone case with built-in headphones

1 Crumpled Sky Star Map There are lots of star-watching apps which will show you everything from the stars to the International Space Station. Crumpled Maps offers an analogue option – a luminescent, waterproof star map which you don't even have to fold, as the name suggests. The constellations glow in the dark and there are different versions based on where you are or the time of year, to reflect the changing night skies. €16 from palomarweb.com

2 Matador FreeRain24 Waterproof Packable Daypack Have you heard the one about the electronics firm that was so successful it moved to smaller premises? Matador seems to follow this philosophy: if you can't make it small, it's hardly worth doing. Cue its waterproof backpack which folds down to tiny palm-sized pouch. Just over 140gm (about 5oz), it opens to become a 24 litre rucksack, with a roll-top keeping it watertight. $60 from matadorup.com

3 TurtleCell The crowd-funded TurtleCell combines several innovations in one phone case. The big thing are the integrated earbuds, and the designers actually paid a bit of attention to the sound quality. The cable spring-retracts into the body, with Kevlar reinforcement for the pulls. There's one-touch control for the built-in mike and a little kick-out leg on the back. $60 from turtlecell.com
