Veteran broadcaster tells podcast he wishes RTÉ ‘was more committed to the arts’

On this week's Róisín Meets podcast, veteran broadcaster Mike Murphy tells Róisín that he wishes RTÉ "was a little more committed to the arts".

The former presenter of RTÉ’s The Arts Show and Winning Streak makes the comment while talking about the late-night scheduling of his 2012 programme, Ireland’s Favourite Painting.

“I have the height of respect for [RTÉ]. I disagree with them and have had serious run-ins with them, but I think they’re a fantastic organisation,” he says.

Murphy also speaks on returning to the State broadcaster to present Play It By Year, a new quiz show that delves into the RTÉ archives and tests contestants on their knowledge of decades past.

Murphy recounts friend and fellow broadcasting veteran Gay Byrne’s reaction to his new job.

“He said: ‘You said you’d never be back. You have no word of honour. I knew you’d come back.’”

Play It By Year starts on December 27th and will air for four consecutive nights on RTÉ One.
