Volkswagen confirms price for Golf Estate

In spite of originally telling us that the Golf Estate would not be coming to Ireland (presumably leaving the field clear for similar models from sister brand Skoda and Seat) Volkswagen has relented to demand for the model and has just confirmed pricing for the new Golf Estate. The new model will cost from €22,280, just €1,000 more than the 5-door hatchback model and will be available with the same trim and engine choices as the Golf hatchback. The range starts with the 1.2 TSI with 85bhp (and a 5-speed manual gearbox), but this engine is also available with 110bhp. The 110bhp engine comes with the choice of 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG semi-automatic.

If it’s diesel you want (and DERV remains the favoured choice for Irish Golf customers) there is a choice of 1.6-litre 90bhp, 1.6-litre 110bhp and 2.0-litre 150bhp, all of which are in Motor Tax Band A3 when fitted with a manual gearbox.

In terms of its luggage space (surely it’s raison d’être) the Golf almost matches the boxier 610-litre Skoda Octavai Combi with a 605-litre cargo capacity, which can expand out to 1,620-litres with the seats folded flat. That puts it slightly ahead of the Seat Leon ST and well ahead of the 476-litre Ford Focus estate.Both are behind the Honda Civic Tourer with its 624-litre boot, however.
