66: Ford Focus – Great fun to drive but losing ground to rivals

Top cars for 2018: Small 1-litre petrol engine is a cracker and the RS is the hot hatch king

If you isolated the Ford Focus range into just the magical, magnificent 350hp Focus RS, then this is a car that would be at or very close to the top of the Top 100. Sadly, lurid blue paint jobs and an ability to turn every roundabout into a Ken Block Gymkhana are not at the top of most buyers priorities list.

That the standard Focus is still a truly great car to drive lifts its rating considerably, as does solid build quality and styling that, if you spec it right, still looks good. The interior is a long way from being up to scratch though, well behind in quality and aesthetic terms, even if the new SYNC3 touchscreen is good.

The best Focus (RS excepted) is actually the sporty-looking ST-Line which is handsome, engaging to drive, and actually a better all-rounder than the expensive-but-disappointing 250hp ST itself. EcoBoost petrol engines are gems, but the 2.0-litre diesel option shouldn’t be ignored as it’s powerful and very refined. Rear seat and boot space both inadequate, and basic spec a bit stingy.

Best model: 1.0 125hp EcoBoost ST-Line

Sum-up: Still fun to drive but slipping back in too many other areas. RS remains the hot hatch king.
