Happy memories in Dublin 8

Early 20th century home on market for €380,000 after 100 years in same family

Minny (nee Byrne) Nugent was born on 4 Donore Road in 1925. Her memories of growing up there are clear, full of life and happy. Very happy.

“Five of us were born here,” she says, “so there were seven of us and no extension at the time. It was known as a half- way house; all of my brothers pals used come in the back way and play cards. We never had a key, no closed doors. I loved it!”

Minny went to work from number four as a chorus dancer in the Olympia, Gaiety and Queen’s theatres. It was the house she left to get married in 1948, when she was 23. Now, four generations later and for the first time in 100 years, number four is on the market.

In need of modernisation, the property is also liveable as it is. The front parlour/ sittingroom has a working fireplace, as has the diningroom behind it, where there is also an impressive, wood-panelled wall. The bright, almost square kitchen/breakfastroom (a latter day extension) is fully fitted and has a tiled floor.

Both bedrooms are double and have built-in wardrobes. The bathroom is on the ground floor. The brightly planted rear garden has decking, while the carefully nurtured front garden has hedging and plants. Street parking is plentiful.
