Fairytale in Foxrock for €1.15m

Four-bed detached bungalow with southwest-facing garden

Named after the village in Co Galway between the City of the Tribes and Tuam, Corofin, a four-bedroom bungalow on just over a third of an acre on Torquay Road in Foxrock, has been in the same family since the owner’s grandparents moved into the newly built property in the 1930s.

The owner’s father was born in the house and his cousins lived next door. The families installed a white wrought-iron gate into the hedge that adjoins both properties to give the children ease of access into both back gardens.

The gate remains but, in fairytale style, has been completely enveloped in the greenery, erasing it from view .

The 152sq m (1,636sq ft) property’s best feature is the spacious livingroom that hasn’t changed since the 1960s.

Back then the owner’s parents installed the beaten copper hood on the statement fireplace – a style that is very much back in fashion.

The room has picture windows and sliding doors that open out, via a small porch, to a patio, complete with tropical palm tree. The kitchen at the gable end of the house also has access to the garden. From the back door you can see another storybook motif, a half-hidden gate that opens out to what was once the old train line to Foxrock.

The owner’s father used to hitch a short ride on it into the village. The track has been filled in and is now a huge playing field.

Executor sale

Three of the four bedrooms are good-sized doubles, while the fourth is a single that would make a smart home office.

It is an executor sale and the décor is a bit dated. The house, which has an F BER rating, also needs an insulation upgrade.

Subject to planning permission, the house could be extended upwards, as can be seen in the works being carried out on the house next door.
