For some buyers the idea of a fixer-upper is a nightmare, but for others the attraction of renovating a property to their taste and specifications can be rewarding both aesthetically and financially.

The current owners of Cintra, 7 Cluny Grove in Killiney, purchased the property three years ago and gave their home a complete overhaul.

While the house did not require a huge amount of structural change, the hidden basics such as plumbing, wiring and dry lining in addition to the complete renovation of the exterior and interiors, were undertaken.

The result is a completely modern house with high-end fittings plus the added benefit of a large landscaped rear garden extending to 19m (62ft). The facade of the house has a more streamlined look than its previous incarnation and features an Iroko door and beach shingle driveway.

The interiors are bright thanks to the use of frosted glass doors and a large Velux window bounces light off the high gloss kitchen which comes complete with Bosch appliances and black granite countertops.

The house has three bedrooms, all tastefully decorated, the smallest of which is currently used as an office. The real selling point of Cintra is the large rear garden, which was landscaped by Brian Wood of Murphy & Wood and this, coupled with an extensive attic, would allow new owners to extend the property, subject to planning.

Cintra standing at 117sq m (1,260sq ft), which was purchased in 2010 for €540,000, is now on the market through estate agent Lisney with an asking price of €985,000.

The last house to be sold in the Grove was Number 1, a 232sq m (2,497sq ft), five-bedroom house in need of renovation. It sold in June 2014 for €750,000.

The asking price for Cintra is rather ambitious on a square metre basis, but may suit a family who do not want the bother of renovation as the property is good to go.
