Island off Clew Bay sold at last

The private island of Inishturk Beg off Clew Bay, Co Mayo, has finally sold for just over €3 million.

The 65 acre island was formerly owned by multi-millionaire businessman Nadim Sadek, who spent about €9 million transforming the island into an idyllic luxury retreat.

It's understood the buyers are a UK-based couple with business interests there and elsewhere who plan to make Inishturk Beg their permanent residence later this year.

The property was placed on the market last July for €2.85 million through Knight Frank Ireland and Sherry FitzGerald, under the instruction of joint receivers Andrew O'Leary and Kieran Wallace of KPMG, after Sadek's fortunes changed.

The Irish-Egyptian businessman featured on The Secret Millionaire in Ireland when it filmed here in 2011.

Ten years ago Sadek set about transforming Inishturk Beg, which is a 10-minute boat ride from Westport, into a luxury sanctuary to escape to.

There are five houses on the island including a magnificent main residence. There are also reception and craft centres, a pier, a separate floating jetty, an all-weather football/basketball complex, facilities for a home cinema, a gym and games complex, a large indoor heated swimming pool and an outdoor sound system.

It's not clear whether the new owners plan to further develop the facilities for visitors to the island.
