Art and antiques: what sold this week

At Whyte’s, ‘Riot Soldier, Belfast’, oil-on-board, by George Campbell, fetches €5,000

Sunday (October 22nd) Hegarty’s Auction Rooms, Bandon, Co Cork. A 1920s’ art deco sapphire and diamond cluster ring €4,800 (€5,000-€6,000); a brass and mother-of-pearl inlaid ladies work/dressing table €1,350 (€1,300

-€1,500). Among the unsold was Rise and Shine a watercolour dated 1915 by Lady Kate Dobbin (€4,000-€6,000) [see pic] that the auctioneer said afterwards was "under negotiation".

Monday (October 23rd) Whyte's Affordable Art Auction, Freemasons' Hall, Molesworth St, Dublin 2. Some 65 per cent of the 270 lots sold.

Lot 603, a diamond brooch €3,200 (€2,800-€3,200); Lot 730, a Yamaha piano €2,800 (€1,200-€2,000); Lot 790, a Bechstein "Baby Grand" piano €900 (€600-€1,000); Lot 700, two Royal Crown Derby "Imari" planters €360 (€200-€300); Lot 674, a 2-piece Edwardian ash bedroom suite €300 (€300-€500). Among the unsold was Lot 814, a Waterford Crystal claret decanter with 4 glasses (€680-€880).

Wednesday (October 25th) O'Reilly's Auction Rooms, 126 Francis Street, Dublin 8. Lot 100, an emerald and diamond cluster ring, with emerald of approx. 4.03ct, diamonds of approx. 1ct in total, mounted in platinum €15,000 (€15,000-€17,000); Lot 307, a pair of "Belle Époque" diamond-drop earrings, each comprising a pear shape old brilliant cut diamond pendant drop, total estimated diamond weight 3.40ct H/I SI, in fitted case by Mappin & Webb, Regent Street, London €9,000 (€9,000-€10,000); Lot 70, an art deco sapphire and diamond line bracelet, made circa 1930, set throughout with old European brilliant cut diamonds of approx 3ct and step cut sapphires of approx 8ct €8,500 (€8,700-€9,000) [see pic]; Lot 158: an Edwardian diamond and pearl scrolling cartouche shape, in fitted presentation case by Walter Wyatt, Bournemouth €3,700 (€3,500-€4,000). Among the unsold was Lot 68, a Rolex "Cellini" watch in 18ct yellow gold on dark brown lizard skin strap (€2,500-€3,000.

Note: Last Saturday’s auction results inadvertently gave the date for the Design auction at de Veres as October 25th. The auction took place on October 15th. The hammer price achieved for Lot 73, a 1960s Italian 10-armed brass and enamel “Sputnik” ceiling light, estimated at €600-€900, was €600.
