Homeliness is hot at Stockholm’s Ett Hem hotel

Forget soulless ‘elegance’, the new trend in hotels is for homely comfort and laid-back style

After decades of designers borrowing style ideas from hotel interiors it’s a relief to see that the tables have finally turned. Nowadays homeliness is hot in hotel looks, with properties increasingly looking to win over guests with creature comforts, honesty bars, guest pantries for complimentary snacks, and general home-from-home vibes.

Formal public spaces are being replaced with snug sitting rooms, where you can kick off your shoes and curl up with a mug of tea and a complimentary newspaper. Stockholm’s Ett Hem, meaning A Home, is leading the charge, with 12 stylish suites and a welcome so warm the boutique hotel feels just like you’re staying at your (very stylish) friend’s home.

With décor created by designer Ilse Crawford, to feel just like your own pad, it's high on comforts and lovely homely touches. The Scandi-chic sensibility is achieved through contemporary furniture, the owner's personal art collection, beautiful textures and a relaxed mood.

Guests can dine in the kitchen, loll in the library with wine, play a board game by the fire, chill in the walled garden or help themselves to goodies from the fridge. It really is like home – only better, and a good deal pricier.
