Health Scan: Cormac Ó hEadhra, presenter of Cormac ag a Cúig, Raidió na Gaeltachta
Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?
I eat a relatively balanced diet. Because I have a fairly sedentary lifestyle in terms of work, I think it’s important to strike a balance so I try to get some fresh air and a bit of exercise almost every day.
How often do you exercise?
At the moment, I run every second day, well, I do it as often as I can. After a while, when you develop a bit of a base, you can do interval running and running for longer periods.
I used to play Gaelic football with An Cheathrú Rua in the Gaeltacht in Galway. The training discipline you develop with a team like that; I think it really stands to you.
Do you get your five a day?
I’d say so. I bring fruit to work and would have various veg at dinner. For convenience I have the frozen veg, though I don’t think it tastes as nice as the fresh stuff. Coming into the summer now I’ll eat more salads, partly because it’s good for me and partly because it’s quick and easy.
Do you worry?
I do. Sometimes I worry about worry. That’s the worst kind of worry – the worry you can’t pinpoint. I’ve a laid-back exterior but my mind tends to race a lot.
What do you do to relax?
I find jogging really relaxing. During a jog, if you are relatively fit, you can almost meditate. If you’re engaged in a good book or a decent conversation, you can forget about life for a while. And having a laugh with family and friends is crucial.
What is your unhealthiest habit?
I used to drink far too much coffee but this year I’ve started drinking decaf tea and coffee – though a regular coffee gets to the table now and then. I drink only on weekends and then only in moderation. I’ve never smoked and that’s probably the best decision I’ve ever made.
