Food for thought in national breastfeeding week

National Breastfeeding Week runs from October 1st to 7th, 2014. Here, Sylvia Thompson gives her reasons why breastfeeding matters


As a mother of three breastfed children, I am a strong advocate of breastfeeding. However, I’d be the first to admit that it takes commitment, determination, patience, a supportive partner, lots of rest, nourishing food and endless glasses of water.

It’s also something that you’ve got to learn how to do – so attending an antenatal breastfeeding class and having someone to phone when I was struggling were central to my continuing to breastfeed.

People who are not so keen on breastfeeding say it’s not for everyone, but most mothers can breastfeed. (And yes, it does help you lose weight without exercise if you keep going for three months or more.)

If you find yourself struggling, don’t doubt yourself and seek support straightaway, whether  from a breastfeeding counsellor with La Leche League or the Irish Childbirth Trust or through a professional lactation consultant.

Your public health nurse will also be able to guide you.  Many women find that this additional support is the key to helping them through the frustrations and challenges of breastfeeding.
