Barfly: Söder + Ko

A warming, sophisticated, Scandinavian ambiance pervades this George’s Street bar

They stock a great Danish IPA called Mikkeller in Söder + Ko that’s stuffed with flavour and is gluten-free, but it might well be the only Scandinavian thing on offer in this Scandi-Asian mash-up. Does that matter?

Yes, if you’re searching for a true Northern Lights experience, but possibly not if you’re just on a Dublin night out.

On each of three recent visits it proved to have captured that other distinctly northern European trait – a large gathering of tech-savvy, attractive, young people. They’ve conjured a heady mix of atmosphere in the large split-level space and between Absolute vodka cocktails and more traditional Irish brands, the bar is heaving with personality.

There are lots of dark corners to get lost in, booths to meet friends and warm heavy wood to keep the whole thing grounded. It’s a great space – a blazing stove fire in the main entrance area, deep leather armchairs and great lighting: chandeliers, candles and spots all blending perfectly together. The massive mirrors and artwork add splashes of colour that work day or night.

A DJ cranks up the volume in the upstairs bar and then suddenly swops his decks for a bright red electric guitar. Groups of young women crowd around with their iPhones set to stun as he lifts his performance higher. It’s a funky, energetic spot that surprises.

The large outside terrace is packed with chat and good humour and it’s clear a great night lies ahead. When I think of my trips to Copenhagen, Oslo or Stockholm I see dark, handsome, high-ceilinged places like this, where people relax and staff smile and great beer, music and conversation helps you forget it’s cold outside. Not such a bad nod to the north.
