Our Wedding Story: A romance inspired by the big screen

Katherine Bohan and Domhnall O’Neill met while working in Cineworld cinema in 2006

Katherine Bohan and Domhnall O'Neill

Katherine, from Glasnevin, met Domhnall, a software developer from Ballyfermot, in 2006 when they were working in Cineworld on Parnell Street.

Their first date was to the cinema (not Cineworld – the Screen) and they got engaged on February 24th, 2014, after Katherine, a nurse, had been working night shifts for a week.

“He left a sign on the front door saying to go into the kitchen. I didn’t see this as I was so tired. As I walked in there were rose petals in the hallway and balloons and rose petals in the kitchen. He got down on one knee and asked, I said ‘yes’ and screamed for a bit. An hour later, we went to bed. I was wrecked from work and he was exhausted because he was too nervous to sleep the previous night.”

On November 28th, 2015, it lashed rain as the couple married in Our Mother of Divine Grace Church on Ballygall Road, Dublin. The bride's uncles Fr Benny Bohan and Fr JP Bohan performed the ceremony, and the groom's uncle Noel and friends, Aoife and Manghus, sang and played music. At the reception in the Westin hotel in the city centre, the couple had their first dance to Eight Days a Week by the Beatles. "It was the one part of the whole day I was nervous about," says Katherine, who wore a Folkster dress. "We aren't known for our dancing skills."

Maid of honour was Niamh Webb, bridesmaids were Katherine's sister Michelle and sister-in-law Aisleagh O' Neill, and flower girl was the groom's niece, Lily. Domhnall's brother Brian was best man and the groomsmen were his brother Shane and friend Keith Bernard.

Katherine remembers the morning time as a favourite part of the day.

“Everyone was just chatting drinking tea, Prosecco and whiskey (that was me).”

“I loved having all our family and friends in one room and how involved everyone was. My mam came to loads of my appointments and fittings and was there for everything really. My sister Christine had recently gotten married herself so she was always there for advice and tips.”

The couple, who live on Benburb Street in Dublin, honeymooned in Grenada and New Orleans.
