The Pro’s Picks

Make up artists really have the edge when it comes to knowing about product performance. Four of the best share their standouts for 2013

"My absolute best product from last year was Chanel's Le Volume Mascara. This could be because I have the most pathetic, nonexistent lashes. The formula, wand and colours are all exceptional and the formula is as fresh on day one as it is on day 60. When I use it on a model or celebrity they always remark on how incredible their lashes look.

I said I would be fair to all product ranges when considering the best launches for 2013 but I wouldn’t be telling the whole truth if I didn’t list Chanel’s Vitalumière Compact Douceur foundation as the best foundation launch of the year. It’s just the most luxurious, versatile and result-driven product. Any face I use it on is all the better for it. The finish is so perfecting and the coverage fantastic.

Lancôme 24 Hour Artliner is another worthy entry for 2013. The pigments, the wearability and the ease of application are all stellar.

I also love Laura Mercier Rouge Nouveau Weightless Lip Colour. The sublime texture and fantastic pigments make this one of the nicest lipsticks I have ever had the pleasure of using. Can't wait to see what new colours are added to the collection this year. Christinelucignano.com

"I really like YSL Touche Éclat foundation for its great texture, also Bobbi Brown's Retouching Powder. Its finely-milled, not chalky and works on all skin types. I also love the fragrance-free 8 Hour Cream from Elizabeth Arden."

"Apricot Glo from my own Play make-up range is a shimmering pot of sheer lotion which is great on the face for a sexy shimmer, or on the body to highlight collar bones. I love the new REN vita mineral lip balm. I use it on my clients at the start of their make-over if their lips are dry and the lipstick just glides on."

"Tom Ford men's lip balm. It's perfect, the matte finish means guys will use it but it's also amazing for eyelids if you want to create a glossy look. The Rouge Ecstasy lipsticks from Giorgio Armani are just beautiful. A huge pay-off of colour as you'd expect, but it also hydrates lips beautifully. My favourite colour is 400; it's the perfect red. Sisley brought out a new eye cream that's rather amazing. I noticed a difference after using it for a week. It's pricey but worth every cent if it tackles all of the 'laughter lines' I seem to be getting." beautybaked.com
