Saoirse Ronan brings #TimesUp fashion black-out to Baftas

The stars descended on the Royal Albert Hall in London for one of the biggest events in the film industry’s calendar - the Bafta Awards. The British event is now in its 71st year and it welcomed a host of celebrities on the red carpet, including Jennifer Lawrence, and Saoirse Ronan. And with the Golden Globes having already played host to a red-carpet black-out, the Baftas, as expected, followed suit.

As the first major awards ceremony this year in Europe, it was a pointed opportunity for the gathering glitterati to show their support for sexual assault victims in head-to-toe black, with a few exceptions. Making a royal arrival was the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton who wore an evergreen chiffon gown by Jenny Packham with a empire-waist cut dress that elegantly fell over her baby bump. In the lead up to the event, there was much discussion about whether Middleton would join the movement by wearing black, but as the Royal Family rarely get involved in political messaging for protocol reasons, it was always unlikely.

Angelina Jolie, and Margot Robbie, stood in solidarity with survivors,  while putting their trademark twist on the monochromatic colour palette. In her habitual thigh-high silhouette, Jolie opted for an off-the-shoulder sweet-heart black velvet gown by Ralph and Russo, elegantly accessorised with chandelier earrings. Taking a sartorial cue from Jolie, actress Andrea Risebourough, wore a embellished gown with a dramatic silt. Continuing her fashion association with Dior, Jennifer Lawrence chose a sharply shaped corseted dress, fresh of the runway from their Spring 2018 couture show.

Proving head-to-toe black doesn’t have to look a bit monotonous, the ever-stylish stars chose embellishment to amp up the solid colour. Saorise Ronan took to the red carpet in a dramatic polo neck feather detailed dress by Chanel - the eye-catching number boasting a plume trim and a sheer skirt. Also opting for a sheer panel that added edge to the the all-black dress code was British actress Karen Gillen and Game of Thrones actress Natalie Dormer with a flowing sheer cape.

Maintaining her style streak, Margot Robbie took to the red carpet in a halter-neck pleated dress with a lace overlay and silver detailing. Salma Hayek wore Gucci and didn’t skimp on details, with an elegant embellished floral detailing. Looking regal in Elie Saab, Black Panther actress Lupita Nyong’o accessorised her dramatic gold and black dress with a Time’s Up pin.

Also pleading her alliance to Time’s Up movement with a pin was Ruth Wilson in a black trouser suit. Plunging necklines, a perennial trend on the red carpet, were not in short supply with Rochelle Humes and Emma Watson choosing the breathtaking neckline.

And the just like the Golden Globes, the stars didn’t just accessorise with dramatic jewels and pretty clutches, a number of activists walked the red carpet with stars including Gemma Arterton, Naomie Harris, and Andrea Riseborough.
