The Irish Times Sportswoman of the Year Award 2010

The monthly winner of The Irish Times Sportswoman of the Year Awards is announced during the second week of each month and is selected by a panel of three independent judges. Information on each month's winner will appear within this page as they are announced.

    Because the overall ceremony has been moved from January to December, largely to facilitate our monthly winners, many of whom are away competing or enduring warm-weather training in January, our year ends with the November award.

    BACK IN July, Derval O'Rourke's silver medal-winning performance in the 100-metre hurdles at the European Championships captured, understandably enough, the bulk of the sporting headlines.

    In the same month, though, another Irish athlete was confirming her potential with an exceptional run at the World Junior Championships in Canada, 18-year-old Ciara Mageean's 1,500 metres silver the first track medal won by an Irish athlete at the event. Read the full article »

    Bray boxer, Katie Taylor, has today added to her growing list of accolades by being named The Irish Times / Irish Sports Council 'Sportswoman of the Month' for September, following her third consecutive International Boxing Association (AIBA) world lightweight title. The news comes just 24 hours after Taylor was announced AIBA world female boxer of the year.

    Taylor beat China's Cheng Dong 18-5 to take her the title in Barbados last month; her 100th victory in 106 matches since 2001. Read the full article »

    Grainne Murphy/Madeline Perry

    Swimmer Grainne Murphy and squash player Madeline Perry have today been named as joint winners of The Irish Times / Irish Sports Council 'Sportswoman of the Month' for the month of August. Murphy won for her outstanding performance at the European Swimming Championships in Budapest, where she became a silver medallist in the senior championships before her 18th birthday.

    Perry won the monthly award for her exceptional win at the Australian Open, one of the major squash tournaments. The thrilling five-game final against England's Alison Waters saw Perry take a two-game lead before Waters rallied to level the match. Read the full article »

    Derval O'Rourke

    Sprint hurdler Derval O'Rourke has today been named The Irish Times / Irish Sports Council 'Sportswoman of the Month' for July following her recent silver medal in the 100-metre Hurdles at the European Championships in Barcelona. This is the fourth championship medal that the 29-year-old Cork woman has won and with a time of 12.65 seconds the former World Indoor champion took .02 of a second off her previous best and has set a new Irish record.     Golf amateur Danielle McVeigh won the award for June, after her exceptional performance in the Curtis Cup in Massachusetts last month. The 22-year-old from Co Down has had a memorable golfing year so far, winning the Scottish Stroke Play Championships in April to add to her British and Welsh titles. Read the full article »

    Valerie Mulcahy (Gaelic football) won in May for her outstanding success in scoring 1-6 of Cork's 2-10 at the National League final in Parnell Park. Her success led to Cork's defeat of Galway, making them National League champions for the third year running. Read the full article »

    Jessica Kurten (show jumping) won the award for the seventh time, making her the only sportswoman who has won the monthly award in every year since they began. She won this due to her triumph at the Swedish World Cup Qualifier in Gothenburg in February, which lifted Kurten third in World Cup rankings and guaranteed her place in the World Cup finals.
