Profile: Peter Fitzpatrick (FG)

Louth: Fifth TD elected of five

From a GAA background, Peter Fitzpatrick (53) is now in his second Dáil although he has been prone to reconsidering his political future. When first approached by Fine Gael to put his name forward to the convention in 2011 he wavered but ultimately decided to run. Last year, he oscillated again as to whether he would seek re-election but changed his mind and decided he would run following a meeting with Enda Kenny. Fitzpatrick’s reclamation of his seat in Louth did not come easy and required a final round slog with outgoing minister Ged Nash. He is best known as the manager of the Louth football team for whom he played in the 1980s. He runs a local electrical wholesale business and has employed up to a couple of dozen people. He is married to Ann and has three grown up children.
