Why can’t we curb speeding drivers?
Sir, – During my recent vacation in Ireland I was shocked at the speed of cars on our roads, on motorways and national routes. By adhering to the speed limits, I was left in the slipstream of probably 90 per cent of cars. Most of the passing cars were exceeding the limit, some at very high speeds. The drivers are well aware they are breaking the speed limit.
There are solutions, but making appeals to drivers to slow down is a waste of time when they know it is unlikely they will be caught. I have driven in other countries, including the US and Canada, where drivers adhere to speed limits because they know they are very likely to be caught.
Other countries can control speeding, why can’t we? – Yours, etc,
