Thursday: Cymande, Jonny Greenwood, Soak, Frequency 783

FUNK
Cymande

Sugar Club, Dublin 8pm €25/€20 thesugarclub.com
James Brown may have been the most sampled man in hip-hop, but this English funk band give him a run for his royalties. Cymande only released a handful of albums during their run in the early 1970s, but tracks such as Brothers on the Slide, Bra and The Message have been sampled by De La Soul, Grandmaster Flash, The Fugees, Gang Starr and many more. Expect a smokin' set of funky, soulful Afro rare grooves.

CLASSICAL/SOUNDTRACK
Jonny Greenwood

National Concert Hall, Dublin 8pm €60/€50/€45/€40 nch.ie
A soundtrack composer – including 2007's There Will Be Blood – when he's not being Radiohead's lead guitarist, Jonny Greenwood premieres Water, which will be performed by the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Greenwood's piece will be preceded by Haydn's Symphony No 83 in G minor (more popularly known as La Poule/The Hen) and Mozart's Piano Concerto in B flat major K595. Water will be followed by Tchaikovsky's evocative Souvenir de Florence. Haydn? Mozart? Tchaikovsky? Orchestras? A long way from The Bends, eh?

SINGER-SONGWRITER
Soak

Meeting House Sq, Dublin 7pm €20 entertainment.ie
Derry's Soak has come a long way in a short time, but she continues to surprise and beguile, not least with her recently released (and irregularly spelled) single, B A noBody. Soak's performance here is the kickstart show for this year's always impressive Hard Working Class Heroes event, which continues its wild and wired way into the weekend. More details in next week's Ticket.

THEATRE
Frequency 783

Project Arts Centre (Cube), Dublin 7.45pm projectartscentre.ie
Brokentalkers, the Irish contemporary theatre makers with a keen social conscience and invigorating command of technique, return to the festival with a new piece that examines health, aging and the future from the perspective of two different generations. Like the title, the tone of planet earth, it is an idea with universal resonance.
