Clouds/Marz/Another Love (Live on SNL)

Decked out like Disco Stu, and surrounded by a phalanx of intergalactic dominatrices (backing band 3rdEyeGirl), Prince was a standout musical guest on SNL earlier this month. The music legend performed an uninterrupted eight-minute jam, comprising a song each from his recent Art Official Age and Plectrumelectrum albums, as well as a cover of Alice Smith's Another Love. The 56-year-old, of course, remains best known for his dazzling guitar work, his pioneering use of text speak song titles and a controversial 16th-century political treatise in which he argued that it is better for a ruler to be feared than to be loved. (Wait, what?)

This new video from the South African duo features a string of pointless cameos by celebrities (Cara Delevingne, Marilyn Manson, Flea, Jack Black, Dita Von Teese) whose faces pop up in music videos so frequently their services may have been secured in a package deal. Yolandi Visser’s vocal is beguiling though.

“Ever since I was eight, I was attached to the mic / I wanted a guitar before I wanted a bike . . . ” Goofy, androgynous, 19-year-old Shamir Bailey is as far from the hip-hop stereotype, virtually, as is conceivable to imagine. (Not many rappers are required to slip the words “Yes, yes, I’m a guy” into their lyrics in order to clear up potential confusion.) This track is likeable, if not especially profound.
