Many of you will recall Cian Galvin from his days slinging beats with Messiah J & the Expert, the Irish duo who produced three sharp albums before going their separate ways. Galvin's debut solo album is a showcase for his skills in pushing an instrumental agenda. As a producer, Galvin appreciates hip-hop's borrowings from the funk, soul, jazz and disco quarters, and this results in rich tapestries of sound. Throughout Dynamic Drift are shades of the paths taken by fellow beatsmiths Blockhead, Mdnsgn, Nightmares on Wax and the late, great J Dilla. But Galvin's own nous for crafting melancholic, lovelorn patterns is very much to the fore on Short Trips and the throwback tones of Dreaming My Life Away.
