Over the past eight years, Santi White has pulled off the admirable trick of becoming very popular indeed (350,000 Facebook followers, thank you very much) while staying under the radar of the mainstream. Good singles, no real hits.
Her third album looks set to continue the pattern, with White’s usual mix of colourful synth textures, varied rhythms and that distinctive yowl of a voice. As usual, there’s a rotating cast of producers, but it’s credit to White’s clarity of purpose that it doesn’t sound like it – whether indulging her love of new wave on the itchy Who I Thought You Were, essaying a sultry take on rap on Chasing Shadows, or collaborating with Drake protege ILoveMakonnen on Who Be Loving Me, it all sounds like different faces of the same dice.
She might be waiting a bit longer for that elusive breakthrough hit, mind you.
