Alan Buribayev conducts the NSO in the greatest and most popular of 19th-century cello concertos, Dvorak’s in B minor, with Alban Gerhardt as soloist. He couples it with Rachmaninov’s Third Symphony, which hasn’t been heard in Dublin for ten years.
The Irish Chamber Orchestra’s RDS programme includes a famous symphony (Haydn’s No 44, nicknamed the Mourning), an obscure one (the 16-year old Mozart’s No 15), and Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin’s most best-known piece, his ingeniously colourful reworking for strings and percussion of music from Bizet’s Carmen.
Finghin Collins continues his exploration of Beethoven’s works for piano and orchestra with the familiar First Piano Concerto and the total oddity that is the composer’s arrangement of his own Violin Concerto, remarkable for the new cadenza he wrote, which features a part for timpani.
