With their 2012 remix album (Lucifer in Dub), Peaking Lights took their signature sound – hazy alt.pop with depth-charge bass lines – to its ultimate conclusion by committing fully to dub. Perhaps it will be seen as a turning point in years to come, because on Cosmic Logic they've taken a scalpel to their sound. Where once the songs drifted languorously for six or seven minutes, now the average length is just over four. And memorable songs abound: New Grrls updates Le Tigre's Hot Topic with its tribute to the heroes of feminism, and Hypnotic Hustle comes on like a dub Depeche Mode. While there's still a psychedelic glow permeating everything Peaking Lights do, bouncy pop songs such as Eyes to See could soundtrack pool parties just as easily as heavy-lidded smoking sessions. The sharper focus suits. peakinglights.com
