Artist: OKO
Genre: Jazz
Label: Diatribe

Terms such as fusion and hybrid don't really do justice to the brave new soundscapes created here by Dublin electro-acoustic quartet OKO on this, their first outing for important Irish indie label Diatribe. Sure, there are echoes of old-school jazz-rock, along with noise, ambient, techno, dubstep, and krautrock, but it's like a brand new category is taking shape, so completely do OKO reconfigure those influences. The quartet will admit to being jazz musicians, but that says more about how they learned to play in the first place than it does about their sound or their audience. Mixing spacey abstraction with mesmeric grooves, and instrumental technique with underground cool, OKO's music points towards a future where no one cares what it's called. Bring it on. diatribe.com
