On stage, in full flight, there's an exuberant creativity and abandonment to the moment in Derry-born guitarist Tommy Halferty. This has endeared him to generations of listeners in Ireland and abroad, but Halferty hasn't always succeeded in recreating that energy in the recording studio. Here however, with his long-standing French trio featuring brothers Jean Philippe and Christophe Lavergne on Hammond organ and drums, the guitarist is very much in the zone with a rhythm section that challenges and inspires him. The results have an immediacy and an honesty to match his live performances. There are echoes of Pat Metheny and John Abercrombie but, particularly in this company, Halferty has a style that is unique, making Blue Impressions a notable addition to the Irish jazz guitar canon.
