Gráinne Mulvey: Akanos & Other Works

Akanos
    
Artist: Robertas Servenikas, Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Elizabeth Hilliard, Joe O'Farrell, Annette Cleary, Gráinne Mulvey
Genre: Classical
Label: Navona Records

Gráinne Mulvey gives the impression of being a composer who's besotted with sound itself. She seems to relish the techniques of processing it in the electronic domain, layering it, accelerating and decelerating it, or sliding it up and down in pieces that traverse blurred intersections between live instruments or singing voice and recorded sound. The full-on extremes of Akanos for orchestra and the atmospheric effects of The Seafarer for soprano (Elizabeth Hilliard) and tape show her at her best. The other pieces here – Steel-Grey Splinters for solo piano (Matthew Schellhorn), and works with tape for flute (Joe O'Farrell), cello (Annette Cleary) and another with soprano – suggest a not always discriminating approach to the choice of musical material. url.ie/8h4q
