Swedish-singer-in-London Fatima Bramme Sey has been the Eglo label's in-house vocalist of choice over the past few years, appearing on well-received tracks by Floating Points and Funkineven. Here she's the main attraction on a debut album that is more soul than electro, a record with some fascinating flavours and bite. Vocally, Sey leans towards the Erykah Badu and Jill Scott school of boho soul. But her collaborators, such as Sam Shepherd (aka Floating Points), Computer Jay, Flako and Scoop DeVille, reroute that sound in some fascinating and mesmerising directions. Do Better is a hypnotic rush of new-school funk, Circle has a woozy, psychedelic blur to it, and Ridin' Round (Sky High) is full of spooked electronics and cool far-side signals. Yet Sey has the skills and span to bridge all of these with elan and produce an album resolutely about a soul music that is still very much in the making. facebook.com/fatimasuniverse
