Electric Picnic Q&A: Oisín McKenna

The spoken words artist shares some festival pointers and his party wishlist

Sum up the Electric Picnic in three words.
Emotional, intense, crusty.

Best festival experience/memory as a punter?
Patti Smith finished off her set with Gloria to a packed out tent at EP a couple of years ago - best live gig moment I've ever witnessed. Sublime.

And as a performer?
My first time performing at Electric picnic was hugely terrifying and amazingly satisfying.

Who is your plus-one and why?
I don't have a plus-one.

It's 4am at a festival – where are you?
Trying to find the rave in the woods, giving up, and swearing that I'll definitely go to it next year.

If you could hang out with one other Electric Picnic act this year, who would it be and why?

Kelis, because she is one of the most consistently excellent and singularly bizarre r'n'b artists of the past decade.

What's in your hypothetical picnic basket?
Wine, granola bars, antihistamines.

What one thing do you not want to miss at this year's festival?
FKA twigs for sure. Most exciting new music to emerge for ages.

Do . . .
Check out the cultural stuff and talks at Mindfield during the day – there's always so much great stuff, and it's an amazing place to chill out in between sessions. Also, stay hydrated.

Don't . . .
Have too strict a schedule in mind of all the things you're going to do and see. Some of the best festival experiences are the things you encounter that are completely unexpected and unplanned.

Oisín McKenna will perform spoken word as part of the PETTYCASH collective.
