Robert Glasper Experiment

Black Radio Blue Note****

Robert Glasper isn’t the first jazzer to hook up with a bunch of hip-hop and r’n’b singers. But the Texas-born pianist brings enough things to the party to make Black Radio– his collaborations with Erykah Badu, Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, Meshell Ndegeocello and others – a delight. Aside from an empathy for where his guests are coming from, Glasper arrives with a killer rhythm section in drummer Chris Dave and bassist Derrick Hodge, who ensure the material has robust, spry foundations. The ensemble soon blast off for new terrain: tracks such as the Badu- anchored Afro Bluecarry much heft, with celestial jazz, a rocksteady backbeat and the singer’s spiritual soul lilt perfectly pitched. Other tracks to take away from this fine adventure beyond the clouds include Cherish the Day, Always Shineand the title track.
