In other hands, an entire record of the music associated with Miles Davis's iconic 1960s quintet might have smacked of necrophilia, but in the hands of saxophonist Dave Liebman, pianist Richie Bierach, bassist Ron McClure and drummer Billy Hart, classics such as Nefertitti and Footprints are not so much exhumed as reanimated, brought to new life with an injection of pure passion. Each of these venerable musicians has his own unique perspective on the music, particularly Liebman, who played with Miles in the 1970s, and each has his say in the course of the record. But what really impresses about Quest, who have been playing together on and off since the early 1980s, is the communal sense of discovery.
