Green Day

¡Tré!Reprise **

The concluding part of Green Day’s recent trilogy (based around the stages of a party) is described by Billie Joe Armstrong as the “cleaning up the mess” album. In reality, ¡Tré! is about as dismal as that “morning after” description sounds. It’s not that the songs are bad, per se. Semi-interesting tracks come near the start and end of this album, with Brutal Love’s 1950-style rock’n’roll and the ramped-up, oscillating punk of Dirty Rotten Bastards slickly shifting tempo and pace. In-between those bookends is a collection of breezy, snot-nosed pop-punk, occasionally catchy but generally utterly forgettable. Overall, it seems from this album – and the disappointing trilogy as a whole – that Green Day have run out of original ideas. Where to next? In any case, at least there’s no Quatro.
