Going out: the best of what’s on this week

Warpaint, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Things We Like, Speculative Fictions, The Suitcase Archive and more

Monday

Lloyd Cole
Set Theatre Kilkenny 8pm €25
set.ie

One of contemporary pop music's more literate songwriters, Lloyd Cole returns to Ireland for a series of shows that focus on what many might describe as his classic songwriting period – from the batch of catchy Commotions hits in the mid-late 80s to his post-Top of the Pops days as a reinvigorated solo artist in New York.

Tuesday

Speculative Fictions
Emma Hartman and Lina Selander. Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh, Co Cork. Until September 18th
siriusartscentre.ie

Emma Hartman's airy, spacious, colour-drenched paintings evoke architectural interiors and expansive land and seascapes. Lina Selander's amalgams of "still and moving images, text and found objects" look to moments when systems or structures collapse and something new emerges. Both are Swedish. Dobz O'Brien of the National Sculpture Factory curated.

Warpaint
National Concert Hall, Dublin 8pm #32
nch.ie

Be duly advised - 12 years after their formation in Los Angeles, Warpaint (left) – present members are Emily Kokal (vocals, guitar), Theresa Wayman (vocals, guitar) Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass, backing vocals), and Stella Mozgawa (drums) – play their only Irish date this year. Psychedelic indie rock at the National Concert Hall? Bring it on.

Wednesday

The Damned
Cyprus Avenue, Cork, 9pm, €25
cyprusavenue.ie

It was 40 years ago that The Damned embarked on a series of firsts as a UK punk band: they released UK punk's first single (New Rose), first album (Damned Damned Damned), and were the first to tour the US. Some may argue about the paucity of material in the past 30 years (a mere four albums), but the core fanbase won't be unduly concerned.

Disclosure
Titanic Quarter, Belfast, 6pm, £52/£35
belsonic.com

Debut album Settle turned Guy and Howard Lawrence into one of the biggest things around on its release in 2013. Both it and follow-up Caracal were rarities because they were albums which united many different tribes. Both albums also showed that the Lawrences were also expertly capable of harnessing the talents of their guests like Lorde, The Weekend and Gregory Porter. Support on this occasion from Kano and SG Lewis.

The Suitcase Archive
Martina Cleary explores photography and memory, with images, texts and objects, including 25 prints by Dorothea Lange.
The Courthouse Gallery, Ennistymon, Co Clare. Until September 16
thecourthousegallery.com

In their capacity to trigger memory, photographs have amazing emotional resonance. Martina Cleary's practice-based PhD research project traces "several photographic memory journeys from the personal to the collective", including a section on Dorothea Lange's 1954 visit to Co Clare, with 25 of her photographs taken there, from the collection of Gerry Mullins, as well as other work by her.

Thursday

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Boucher Road Playing Fields, Belfast, 4pm, £49.50
tennantsvital.com

The enduring appeal of Red Hot Chili Peppers – the band has been around since 1983 – continues. Their most recent album, The Getaway, advances the notion that they are still able to divide their critics, some of which (guilty, your honour) just don't see or get the attraction. Special guest is Labrinth.

Things We Like
JJ Smyths, Aungier St, 9pm, €10
jjsmyths.com

Bassist and composer Ronan Guilfoyle puts aside his own music for a night and pays tribute to one of his own influences, the great Cream bassist Jack Bruce, who died in 2014. For the second outing of this project, Guilfoyle is joined by saxophonist Michael Buckley, pianist Izumi Kamura and guitarist Joe O'Callaghan. Expect re-examinations of classics such as White Room.
