Dublin Bus chief executive, Paddy Doherty, is retiring shortly and will be succeeded by the public transport company's human resources manager, Ray Coyne.

Mr Doherty has been chief executive of Dublin Bus for five years and has spent four decades in total with the company.

He has written to board members thanking them for their support “during some challenging years” for Dublin Bus and also complimenting the hard work and dedication of its staff.

Mr Doherty is leaving as the Government prepares to move ahead with plans to privatise some bus routes.

The plan sparked a strike by workers at the two State-owned public transport companies, Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann, early last month.

His successor, Mr Coyne, is currently the company’s human resources services manager.
