Web Log: Mark Zuckerberg channels ‘Iron Man’ with AI butler

Facebook founder plans to code digital assistant as a fun intellectual challenge

It's that time of year when Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg shares his new year's resolutions with us mere mortals. In 2015 he started a book club and worked his way through two books a month. Big deal, Mark. We can all do that. Wipe that smug look off your face because this year's project is a little more challenging. Zuckerberg is aiming to build an artificially intelligent butler to run his home.

This AI gentleman's gentleman will, among other things, answer the door, watch the baby and control the lights, temperature and music. Don't worry, though, it's just "a simple AI", he says. Something like Jarvis from Iron Man, he says. And Zuckerberg plans to code all of this himself as a fun intellectual challenge. Now my resolution to finally use my spiraliser looks a bit underwhelming.
