Outlast is either the best or worst game to play while sheltered from the recent stormy weather. All of the horror tropes are here: a vulnerable hero quivering in hiding places, doors abruptly slamming shut, and, naturally, inanimate objects given animation. In this first-person survival horror, you play Miles, a journalist investigating corruption in the abandoned Mount Massive Asylum. After finding bloodstained walls, incriminating documents and mysterious goings-on, Miles soon realises that this night isn't about breaking a story; it's about getting out alive. Outlast is a traditional survival horror, a fun genre that's sadly dying out. With its decent story, great sound design and challenging gameplay, it's engaging and legitimately scary. Some players might find the formula of puzzles, running, and hiding a little one-note but, limitations aside, this is still a knowing, creepy and atmospheric horror.
