Letters of 1916 Ireland’s first crowd-sourced humanities project

Joint initiative between TCD, Maynooth and the Digital Repository of Ireland has gathered more than 1,800 letters to date

The Letters of 1916 is the first crowd-sourced humanities project to take place in Ireland. This joint initiative between Trinity College Dublin, Maynooth University and the Digital Repository of Ireland has gathered more than 1,800 letters to date from private collections and institutions in Ireland and abroad. These letters are from the people who lived through the 1916 Rising and the first World War, as well as life as usual in Ireland in the early 20th century. They range from the correspondence of historical figures including Éamonn Ceannt and Roger Casement to love letters sent from the trenches during the Battle of the Somme. The public can help by contributing their own letters or helping to transcribe existing ones on the site.
