Carrying your own things is so last year. Dragging your wheeled suitcase around after you? So Luddite.

Or at least that’s what the makers of a new cargo-carrying robot want you to think. Gita – pronounced “jee-ta” and meaning “short trip” in Italian – was designed by the makers of Vespa, and will carry up to 18kg of gear in its frame.

It’s controlled through a belt worn by its owner, which has a built-in camera that maps the world around it.

Speeds of up to 35km/h

It can reach speeds of up to 35km/h, so it can keep up with your pace even if you are cycling, and will work for about eight hours between charges.

As long as you are wearing that belt, Gita will follow faithfully behind. At about 60cm tall and resembling a ball with added bicycle tyres, you’ll probably get a few funny looks along the way.

However, like the Dalek in Doctor Who, stairs could prove to be the Gita's Achilles' heel.
