Asia Briefing: Havok showcases gaming technologies

Irish games technology group targets major gaming market

Irish games technology company Havok, which provides interactive software solutions for the global games and entertainment industries, is running a roadshow of technologies in seminars across China from May 27th to June 5th.

The Emmy award-winning company – owned by Intel – will use the roadshow to give Chinese game companies an overview of its technology portfolio, and demonstrate how its technology addresses the diverse needs of designers, technical artists and programmers to help make content creation fast, easy, and efficient.

TCD spin-out
The Chinese are avid gamers, but the market is dominated by domestic firms, and there is scope for expansion.

"This is a really exciting time for game development in China and we're thrilled to be part of it," said David Coghlan, managing director of Havok. "Game development in China continues to be an important and ever-growing market for us."

The company began life as a spin-out from Trinity College Dublin in 1998, and it opened an office in China last year to support its work with the local operations of western studios.

“With the recent opening of our Shanghai office and the expansion of our localised team in China, this roadshow seminar series marks a great step forward in our efforts to enhance our traction within the region and educate developers in China about what Havok’s technology has to offer,” he said.

The roadshow would allow Havok a great opportunity to interact with developers in the region and present ways in which Havok’s portfolio technologies can help address a broad spectrum of development challenges, making content creation faster, easier, and more efficient, he said.

Film projects
Havok has more than 13 years of experience servicing the most demanding technical requirements for leading customers in the commercial games and entertainment industry, with its technologies currently being used in over 500 titles.

The company has also been involved in a number of film projects, with its technology used in The Matrix , the Harry Potter series and the James Bond film Quantum of Solace .

During the roadshow, Havok’s industry experts will also walk through a series of best practices to help developers address some of the most common challenges in game development.

The tour will include Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Beijing and Taipei.
