Lufthansa profit warning, 400 new hotels for Hilton in China, new Cathay Pacific route, free wifi for Marriott Rewards members

Global growth and competition affect Lufthansa

There was unsettling news from Germany last week when Lufthansa revised downwards its profit forecast for next year. The predicted operating profit of €2 billion has been revised to about €1 billion.

The reasons given are weakening global growth and fierce competition driving down ticket prices. Lufthansa lost €170 million due to industrial action by employees in recent months.

Hilton signs up to China deal

Hilton Hotels has signed a licensing agreement with Plateno Hotels in China to rapidly launch and develop the mid-scale Hampton by Hilton brand across the country. Plateno is one of China's leading hospitality groups.

The aim is to have 400 deals signed and the first hotel opening next year.

Plateno Hotels has 3,000 hotels in 300 cities across China and 80 million members in its loyalty programme.

Manchester to Hong Kong flight

Cathy Pacific will begin a new direct service from Manchester to Hong Kong next month.

The four times weekly service will be operated using a Boeing 777-300ER with business class, premium economy and the new economy class.

The service will be accessible from most Irish airports and avoids the congestion of Heathrow.

Free wifi from Marriott Hotels

Marriott Hotels are encouraging direct bookings by introducing free wifi to all 47 million members of the Marriott Rewards programme.

Book direct through Marriott.com and reservations from next January 15th will enjoy free standard wifi in 3,800 Marriott and associated brand hotels.
